Mildred L. Shaffer

Mildred L. Shaffer, 97, of North Main Street, Bolivar, N.Y., passed away Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017, in Highland Park Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Wellsville, N.Y.
She was born Feb. 23, 1920, in Northumberland, a daughter of the late Chester P. and Marguerite Rose (Marshall) Gaugler. On Sept. 16, 1939, she married Paul Benjamin Shaffer who preceded her in death on Nov. 23, 1992.

Mildred was the valedictorian of the 1937 graduating class of Northumberland High School.
She attended the First Baptist Church in Northumberland and later the Emmanuel Bible Fellowship Church, Sunbury.
She took in laundry from various families in the neighborhood on Mondays and Tuesdays and cleaned houses later in the week.
Mildred was an avid reader, reading hundreds of books and enjoyed keeping up with the news and current events.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janice A. and David E. Lawton, of Bolivar; her son and daughter-in-law, David E. and Karen (Johnson) Shaffer, of Burleson, Texas; grandchildren, Mark A. Lawton and wife Laurie A., of Nunda, N.Y., Bryan D. Lawton, of Norfolk, Va., Lori J. Lawton, of Wappingers Falls, N.Y., Paul D. Shaffer and his wife Shaula. of Burleson, Texas; great-grandchildren, Noelle M. and Benjamin D. Lawton.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Bernice Gubin, Lenore Roush, and June Hare; her twin brother, George, and brother, Donald Gaugler.

Friends and family may visit from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St., Northumberland, followed by the funeral at 1, with her son, the Rev. David E. Shaffer officiating.
Interment will follow in Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury.
