Melvin "Pete" L. Edwards

Melvin Pete L. Edwards Melvin L. "Pete" Edwards, 90, a longtime resident of Woolrich, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019, at the Watsontown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by his devoted and loving family.

He was born Oct. 5, 1928, in Jersey Shore, a son to the late Theodore and Jennie (Jerles) Edwards. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and sister in laws, Veron and Lida Edwards, James and Carolina Edwards and Carl "Butch" Edwards; and one sister and brother-in-laws, Inez and Bruce McKean and Carl Swinehart.

He was married Aug. 9, 1947, to the former Florence Cline who survives, celebrating 71 years of marriage.

Pete was a 1947 graduate of Jersey Shore High School. He was a combat veteran of the Korean War, serving as a sergeant with the Army in CO F, 31st Infantry Regiment in Korea. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, United Nations Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. Although proud of his service, Pete was very humble about his accomplishments and spoke little of his service unless he was asked.

Pete worked hard all of his life, first as a young teenager at the Woolrich Woolen Mills, then Korea, and then was the manager of Woolrich General Company store retiring after 45 years.

He was a member of the Blue Lodge Masons, Korean War Veterans in Williamsport, and a former member of the Kiwanis Club in Lock Haven. Pete volunteered his cooking skills for many organizations.

Pete enjoyed camping, fishing, and hunting trips with his family, and loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Richard (Jody) Edwards of Milton and Jeffrey (Robin) Edwards of Rawlings, Md.; grandson, Daniel (Hope) Edwards of Milton; granddaughter, Christina (Nick) Fellander of Washington; great-grandsons, Dylan Edwards and Dominic (Lexi) Mahoney of Kansas; sisters, Lauranne Swinehart of Avis, Ruth Carson of Jersey Shore and Dianne (Mike) Larson of Loyalsock; and a sister-in-law, Mary Jane Edwards.

A time of visitation will be held 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, followed by the funeral at 11, at Frederick B. Welker Funeral Home, 125 N. Main St., Jersey Shore, with the Rev. Gary Shumway officiating.
He will be laid to rest in the Woolrich Cemetery with full military honors accorded by the Korean War Veterans of Williamsport.
