Melvin L. Groves


Melvin L. "Mel" Groves, 76, of Stone School Road, Northumberland, passed away on Thursday, June 13, 2019, at his home.
He was born March 25, 1943, in Erie, a son of the late Herbert M. and Norabelle Q. (Blystone) Groves. On June 17, 1967, he married the former Nancy L. Vargo who survives.

Mel was a graduate of General McLane High School in Edinboro. He served in the Air Force entering Aug. 26, 1965, serving during the Vietnam War and was honorably discharged on Sept. 2, 1968 with the rank of sergeant.
He was employed with Carter Lumber of Fairview, later transferring to Carter Plumbing, Electric and Heating, Northumberland as a manager. There he became know as the "Answer Man", having a solution to any problem that his customers faced. Following retirement he worked as a subcontractor, doing instillations for Lowes.
He was a member of the Band Parents Association of The Shikellamy Marching Braves. He was a member and faithful contributor of the American Cancer Society's Relay For Life Team, Carol's Crusaders.
Mel had a talent for woodworking and enjoyed making many pieces for his family. As an avid NASCAR fan, Mel followed his two favorite drivers, Kasey Kahne and Bill Elliott and more recently, Chase Elliott.

In addition to his wife of nearly 52 years, Mel is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly M. and Michael S. Ferlazzo of Northumberland; son, William M. "Bill" Groves of Sunbury; two grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Kristopher; sister, Norma Jean Rounds of Erie; half brother, John Scott and his wife Marjorie of Apalachin, N.Y.; and numerous nieces, nephews and his many close friends who referred to him as "Daddy Mel".

He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert Groves; two sisters, Virginia Faulhaber and Doris Dietrich; two half sisters, Shirley Miller and Alice Elizabeth Scott in infancy; and his very special niece, Terri Payne.

Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June17, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, followed by the funeral at 11, at the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St., Northumberland, with the Rev. Mark Gittens officiating.

Burial with military honors will follow in Orchard Hills Cemetery, Shamokin Dam.

The heart knows no distance...Love lives on.. Mel was an amazing person. He will be missed by so many. He was a "special friend" that will never be forgotten and forever loved. He took all the love with him to heaven where he will wait for all of us to join him someday.. GOD bless you my dear friend Nancy, GOD bless your children and grandchildren..
