Melva M. Sowers, 97, of Nottingham Village, Northumberland, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016, at her home.
She was born April 18, 1919, in Northumberland, a daughter of the late Isaiah Willets and Katie (Haines) Stewart.
Melva attended Shamokin Dam schools for 10 years. On July 1, 1940, in St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Roanoke, Va., she married Houston H. Sowers who passed away on July 14, 1998.
She was employed at Bromo Mint Mfg., Selinsgrove, at L'Aglon Dress Mfg., Sunbury, and Wilson Mfg., Sunbury, then she and her husband bought and operated their jewelery store Sowers Jewelers, 1299 Market Street, Sunbury for 27 years.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Sunbury, the Fort Augusta Court 127 Order of Amaranth where she was the historian since 1984. She was also a member of White Shrine of Jerusalem for more than 28 years and the Eastern Star 266 since 1999.
Melva had no hobbies but enjoyed playing cards and being with her many close friends. A favorite pastime was walking and writing to far away friends and relatives.
She is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law, Kim S. Sowers, of West Palm Beach, Fla., and William C. and Sharon Sowers, of Silverthorne, Colo.; two grandsons, Craig F. Sowers, of Denver, Colo., and Michael H. Sowers, of Chicago, Ill.; and many nephews and nieces.
Melva was preceded in death by one sister, Irene J. Brennan; and one brother, Elmer W. Stewart.
Friends and family will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the David T. Zweier Funeral Home Inc., 157 Chestnut St., Sunbury, where the funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, with Pastor Richard Fangmann officiating.
Interment will follow in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
