Maxine's Story

Maxine D. Mitchell, 79, of Selinsgrove, passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2017, at Geisinger Medical Center.

She was born in Shamokin on Aug. 31, 1937, the daughter of late Harold and Dorothy Hill. She was married in 1994 to Aaron Mitchell who preceded her in death in 1997.

After graduating from Shamokin High School in 1956 she lived a long life of being a homemaker. She was affiliated with many organizations: Women of Moose, Selinsgrove, Ladies Auxiliary VFW, Sunbury, Bluebird Society of PA, American Legion Auxiliary, Sunbury, and was a member of Sharon Lutheran Church in Selinsgrove.

Maxine took great pride in being a mother and grandmother. She took great pride in getting everyone riled up, especially her children, and ribbing everyone at family gatherings. Anyone who attended a picnic or meal, be it a friend or extended in-law, was immediately considered family to her. She loved animals and even thought of all our furbabies as her grandkids (we all know Zoey was her favorite). She looked forward to the holidays and seeing everyone together bickering, laughing, playing games, and getting loud. Her grandchildren would sneak her drinks, and her children would try to water them down. She'd insist on cooking way more than any one family could consume, and wouldn't show up anywhere without Tupperware for leftovers. She loved giving out the items that she knit and crocheted herself, even if the item was tot sized and for an 18 year old. She was extremely amused by life as she lived it and wouldn't have it any other way, literally.

There will be a noticed absence at any and all family events. My gram loved keeping everyone on their toes, the countryside, and men. She was colorful that way, which has gifted us all numerous stories to carry on her memory.

Maxine is survived by three children, Sharon Green, April and John Stahl and Michael and Melissa Stepp, all of Sunbury; grandchildren, Joseph Green, Aaron and Samantha Clark, Amber and Aaron Lenker, Ashleigh Stepp, Shannon Stepp, Brendan Stepp; great-grandchildren, Broden Clark and Laney Clark; step-grandchildren, Janelle Stahl, Alex Stahl, Jacob Urey, Cara Urey, Ainsley Urey; siblings, Shirley and Dave Tumolo, of Selinsgrove, Donald and Joann Hill, of Tennessee; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her infant sister, Dorothy Mae.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Northumberland Memorial Park.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Kidney Foundation of Central PA, 1500 Paxton St., Harrisburg, PA 17104 or the American Diabetes Association, 501 N. 17th St., Allentown, PA 18104.
