Mary Ada Sowers

January 28, 1926 - January 27, 2019

Mary Ada Sowers Mary Ada (George) Sowers, 92, of Sunbury, went to be with her Lord on Jan. 27, 2019, in Gainesville, Fla., where she had been residing with her daughter, Susan.

Mary was born Jan. 28, 1926, in Sunbury, a daughter of the late Albert C. and Leah E. George. She was married to William L. Sowers who preceded her in death.

Mary was an accomplished artist in both oils and watercolors. She sewed beautifully, made incredible quilts, all the while working full-time, first at Sears, Roebuck and Company and then many years at First National Bank in Sunbury. She retired from the bank and along with her husband Bill, created a unique framing business, "Nature-ly Nice Crafts" which was responsible for framing a large amount of art pieces all over the Central Pennsylvania region.
Mary was active in her church, Zion Lutheran Church, Sunbury, and sang in the Chorale. She enjoyed the Garden Club while she was able to participate. In her earlier years, she was a very accomplished athlete, including swimming and diving. She was quite something on ice skates also.
After living in Sunbury, all her life, at the age of 92, Mary moved to Florida to live with her daughter where the weather was much more conducive to her convalescing and she could see grandchildren and great-grandchildren daily. In her 92nd year, she was able to go to the beach and pick sea shells, visit restaurants where she could eat fresh seafood, but her heart always remained in Sunbury where she is returning.

She is survived by her brother, William R. George of New Holland; her son, Michael Alan and his wife Laura of Sunbury; her daughter, Susan Ann Sowers Major of Gainesville, Fla.; six grandchildren; two stepgrandsons; 10 great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandson.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, in the Apple Chapel of Zion Lutheran Church, Sunbury. Attendees will be received at 10 a.m. There will be no viewing.
Burial will follow in Northumberland Memorial Cemetery, Stonington.
Contributions may be made to Zion Lutheran Church, 15 S. Fifth St., Sunbury, PA 17801.
