Margaret's Story

Margaret E. Smith, 98, a former resident of the Cottages of Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village, Lewisburg for 22 years, passed away at Buffalo Valley Lutheran Village late Tuesday evening, May 31, 2016.

A native of Union County, she was born in Mifflinburg, Jan. 26, 1918, a daughter of the late Clarence and Mary (Miller) Shoemaker. She was married to Richard M. Wagner for six years, until his death in January of 1945 during World War II. She then married John William "Bill" Smith in 1949, who preceded her in death in 1981 after 32 years of marriage.

Margaret was a graduate of the Mifflinburg High School.

She and her husband Bill Smith enjoyed collecting and selling antiques, operating the Bil-Mar Antique Shop in Northumberland for more than 20 years.

Margaret was an active member of St John's Lutheran Church of Northumberland, where she was an active member of the Sunday school class.

Margaret was well known for her hooked wool rugs, loved quilting, braiding rugs, crewel work, puzzles, macramé, painting, playing cards, her old doll collection, and many bus trips with her sisters. She especially enjoyed sitting in the sun.

Surviving are four children and their spouses, Richard A. and Barbara Wagner, of Chambersburg, Georgene and Wesley Meals, of Ridgeway, James and Ruth Smith, of The Villages Florida and Patricia Beaver and her husband Eugene of The Villages Fla.; six grandchildren, Melinda VanDillen, Kevin Meals, Michelle Carpenter, and Amy Mintz, and David and Justine; six great-grandchildren, Zachary VanDillen, Gabriel, Bethany and Thora Mintz, and Camden and Brett Ricketts; and one sister, Mary Katherine Ruhl, of Mifflinburg.

She was preceded in death by siblings, Miller Shoemaker, Lorene Alexander, Lena Johnson, Alma Moyer, and Carolyn Dale; and one grandson, Matthew Smith.

Friends and relatives will be received from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the John H. Shaw III Funeral Home, Market and Eighth streets, Lewisburg, followed by the funeral at 12:30, with her pastor, the Rev Patricia Pittsnaugle officiating.

Burial will follow in the Lewisburg Cemetery.
