Leonard's Story

Leonard Fenton Broome, 94, of Northumberland, passed away Tuesday evening, May 23, 2017, at Nottingham Village, Northumberland, surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born Feb. 15, 1923, in Northumberland, a son of the late John and Marguerite (Reid) Broome. On Sept. 6, 1947, he married the former Catherine Hare who preceded him in death in 2016.

Leonard was a 1941 graduate of Northumberland High School. He was an Army veteran, serving with the 5th Infantry Division in France during World War II. Len was instrumental in helping to form the VFW in Northumberland where he was a member. He and his wife enjoyed traveling the United States to attend his Army reunions and was a proud patriot.
He was employed by Merck & Co Inc. After retiring from Merck in 1984, he volunteered for Meals on Wheels and served the community for many years.
Leonard was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Northumberland, where he served on council, was a liaison for the Boy Scouts, and was an active member up until his time of passing.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Louis Van Gilder, of Northumberland; two grandchildren, Andrea (Scott) Watt, of Gainesville, Va., and Holly Bedisky, of Northumberland; and three great-grandchildren, Kanen, Marah, and Van.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Riverview Cemetery, Northumberland, with the Rev. Patricia Pittsnogle officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post 44.

Contributions in Leonard's memory may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, Northumberland.
