Karen's Story

Karen Wiest, 71, of 340 Milts Road, Sunbury, passed away at 1:06 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 28, at Geisinger Medical Center.

Born in Johnstown on Aug. 5, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth Machtley and Doris (Larson) Machtley. She was also blessed with a stepmother, Mary Evanick Machtley.

Karen had been a resident of Northumberland County since 1969.

Mrs. Wiest was an English teacher for Line Mountain School District, and retired as the high school principal. She also taught Introduction to Education at Susquehanna University.

On Dec. 27, 1969, she married Judge William H. Wiest in Johnston. Bill passed suddenly on May 27, 2017.

Mrs. Wiest graduated from Richland High School, Johnstown, received her bachelor of science degree from Clarion University, and her master's degree from Bucknell University.

Karen was a faithful member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Dalmatia, and also a deacon of the church. She was active with her husband in many community and historic organizations including Sunbury Hospital Board of Directors, Sunbury Community Foundation, Lower Mahanoy and Mahatango Historical Society, Pa. German to Palatine Society, Habitat to Humanity, and Spreading Antlers.

She is survived by her children, Joel Wiest and wife Staci, Rachael Wiest Benner and husband Jason, and Elizabeth Grimm and husband Steve, all of Sunbury, Chad Wiest, of Shamokin, and Patrick Wiest, of Raleigh, N.C; along with her grandchildren, Anna Marie Wiest, Lila Dawn Wiest, Logan David Tobias Wiest, Maggie Asa Brenner, Payton Elizabeth Wiest, Kaci Elizabeth Grimm, and Jacob Luke Grimm. Also surviving are brothers and sisters, Susan Carl and husband Tom, of Herndon, Ronald Machtley and wife Kati, of Smithfield, R.I., Melissa Richardson and husband Gerald, of Bedford, and Ken Diable and wife Romayne, of Williamsburg, Pa.; along with her brother-in-law, Roger Wiest, of Sunbury; and sister-in-law, Geraldine Wiest, of Sunbury.

She was preceded in death by her two sons, David and Tobias Wiest, who died March 22, 1998; and her stepmother, Mary Evanick Machtley.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, at Himmel's Church, 1941 Schwaben Creek Road, Rebuck, with the Rev. J. Albright and Rev. Sally Dries presiding.

Burial will be in St. Luke's Cemetery, Malta.
