June Funk

Events

On Feb. 9, 2019, June (Ocker) Funk of Sunbury, left this earth and entered into the Almighty Kingdom of Heaven with Our Lord Jesus Christ for all eternity. June passed quietly at home surrounded by her devoted family after her beautiful, loving heart ceased beating.

June was born March 4, 1935, in Sunbury, a daughter of Lester L. and Kathryn (Batey) Ocker of Sunbury, where she resided all her life.

She attended Sunbury High School, class of 1953, and served as the class reunion treasurer for many years. She was always proud that she had completed grades 1 through 12 with a perfect attendance record!

June is survived by her husband George "Goose" Eugene Funk, whom she married on Aug. 30, 1958. They celebrated 60 years of marriage together this past August. She is also survived by her children, Blaze Eugene Funk of Sunbury, Clayton Eugene and wife Mary Louise (Semicek) Funk of Paxinos, and Leslie Elaine Funk and life partner Janice Hiller of Linden; grandchildren, Bray Alan Funk of Sunbury and Caitlin Elizabeth Funk of Paxinos; stepson, Arthur Dean Funk of Riverside; brother, William Lester Ocker and wife Ginny of Montoursville; several brother and sisters-in laws, and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.

June was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Nancy Ocker Hare in 2014; brother-in-law, Donald R. Hare in 2017, both of Sunbury; and stepdaughter, Georgina Funk of Riverside.

June was a lifelong member of Albright United Methodist Church, now Faith United Methodist Church.

June was employed for 17 years by Northumberland County in the Treasurer's, Prothonotary's and County Commissioner's offices. In 1997, June retired from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Workman's Insurance Fund after 25 years. She also served as secretary of Shikellamy Sports Booster Club for several years.

June was a member of the Sunbury Democratic Women's association as well as a life member of the East Sunbury Hose Company's ladies dartball league.

Sports were a major part of her life, and the Funk sports family, having started with June and George, was well known in the Sunbury and surrounding areas throughout the 1970s and 1980s. First, as great athlete in her own right, June participated in sports all of her young life - through school, summers and whenever there was a softball or basketball game around. She coached elementary girl's basketball and helped organize a girl's softball league in the Sunbury summer program. Then, in her young married years, she enjoyed going to Goose's (a well-known athlete in the area) basketball and softball games. June eventually spent a great deal of time following her children through their school, summer, college and adult sporting activities, followed by her grandchildren's sports activities. June and Goose were regular fixtures at their children's and grandchildren's sporting events and were well loved by everyone that crossed their paths.

June was a kind and humble wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. She was fiercely protective of her family and loved being with them, be it at family outings, picnics, or trips to the shore. June especially loved the beach and Ocean City, Md., held a very special place in her heart.

June will be cremated and anyone who would like to attend can join us for a celebration of her life at Trinity Lutheran Church, 900 Susquehanna Ave., Sunbury, from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019. We will share our love, our stories, and our friendship for a beautiful woman who touched all our lives.

In lieu of flowers, donations in June's honor may be made to St. Jude's, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or the American Cancer Society, 1420 N. Susquehanna Trail, Selinsgrove, PA 17870.
