Josephine B. "Jo" "Josie" Nowak, 95, of King Street, Northumberland, formerly of Mountain Top, passed away on Thursday, July 27, 2017, at the Golden Living Center - Mansion, in Sunbury.
She was born Oct. 6, 1921, in Plains Township, Luzerne County, a daughter of the late Jacob and Mary (Cichoski) Kopec. On Nov. 19, 1949, she married John A. Nowak who preceded her in death on Jan. 6, 1991.
Josephine attended Cotton Avenue Elementary School, Hudson, and later Plains High School.
She gained employment with Mary Macintosh Laundry in Wilkes-Barre and other local businesses.
She was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church, Sunbury.
Josephine was an avid walker and enjoyed traveling to Atlantic City. She also enjoyed watching television gameshows including Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Eleanor A. and Ronald E. Knarr, of Northumberland; two grandchildren and their spouses, Matthew B. and Kelly M. Knarr, of North Potomac, Md., and Lenore M. and Jason E. Hanley, of Danville; four great-granddaughters, Madeline, Gabriella, EllaMarie, Makayla, and a fifth great-granddaughter expected in October.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Mike, Leo, Theodore and Chester Kopec; and three sisters, Susan Victor, Mary Keen and Genny Simerson.
Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St., Northumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Monica Catholic Church, 109 Market St., Sunbury.
A graveside service will be held at 11a.m. Friday in Calvary Cemetery, Drums.
