John L. Wentzel

July 16, 1952 - October 19, 2017

John L. "Casey" Wentzel, 65, of Sunbury, passed away Thursday, Oct. 19, 2017, at his home.
He was born July 16, 1952, in Sunbury, a son of the late John Henry Curtis Wentzel, M.D. and the late Cora E. (Pealer) Wentzel.
Casey was a 1971 graduate of Shikellamy High School.
He was employed by Viking Motors for more than 30 years, retiring in October of 2016.
He was a unique and independent gentle soul, admired by many but understood by few, who loved to laugh and make others laugh. He traveled the country earlier in life in a camper/van he designed and built, living in California for a couple of years before permanently returning to this area in the early 1980s. He had an in depth knowledge of the workings of the motor vehicles. Because of this; his working life was always centered around automobiles and trucks, either repairing them or "shining them up", to use his words. He was considered by many to be the best auto detailer in the valley, especially by the Viking Motors crew to whom he was family. One of his attributes was a green thumb for growing flowers which covered his porch and brought him much pleasure. He enjoyed riding bicycle and had a small collection which he maintained himself. An accomplished cook he loved to eat, with pizza parlors and hoagie shops at the top of his dining out list. He would drive many miles to try a new sandwich he had heard about. He had an affinity for hats and had many different ones of all shapes and colors to cover any circumstance. He had the resolve to stick with one of his best friends who had been diagnosed with ALS. All through the illness, they made driving excursions through the mountains almost every weekend, bringing joy into both of their lives until the bitter end. For the people that knew him and cared about him he was special and will be missed. Fairwell Casey, you were one of the good ones.
He is survived by one sister, Barbara K. Wentzel, location unknow; two cousins, Gary Wentzel, of Shamokin Dam, and Carol (Wentzel) Felix, of Selinsgrove.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Curtis Dale Wentzel in 1956.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Olley-Gotlob Funeral Home, 539 Race St., Sunbury, with Pastor Jana Born Larsen officiating.
Burial will follow in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
The family will provide the flowers. Contributions in Casey's memory may be made to Degenstine Library or to the donor's favorite charity.
