John J. Ritter, 96, of Stuck Street, McClure, passed away on Monday, Aug. 28, 2017, at the Ohesson Manor, Lewistown.
He was born on June 21, 1921, a son of the late Thomas and Ella (Badger) Ritter. In 1950, he married the former Pauline Sanders who preceded him in death in 1987. On Aug. 15, 1997, he married the former Louella Laub-Henry who survives.
John was a 1940 graduate of Burnham High School, where he played high school football and basketball. He served in the Army from 1942-1945 during World War II, building bridges over the Rhine, in Northern France, Central Europe, Rhineland and Ardennes. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with four Bronze Stars.
He had been employed at Viscose for 30 years, Standard Steel for 10 years, Spig's Electric in McClure and also the McClure Borough.
John was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, McClure where he served on the Church Council, a life member of the American Legion Post 942, McClure for 66 years and the VFW Post 9640, Paxtonville where he served as quartermaster for 30 years. He also served as one of the original members on the McClure Borough Council for 44 years and board member of the McClure Veterans Memorial Pool for 23 years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his stepchildren, Allen Henry and wife Jo, of Beaver Springs, Danny Henry and wife Sharon, of McClure, and Cheryl Henry, of Middleburg; six stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; two stepgreat-great- grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his stepson, Richard Sanders; two sisters, Mary Loudenslager and Dorothy Reed; and two brothers, Richard and George Ritter.
Friends and family will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Pheasant Funeral Home, 316 W. Market St., Beavertown. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, McClure with the Rev. Lisa Schuster officiating.
Burial with military honors will follow in the McCLure Union Cemetery.
