John's Story

John Lawrence "Larry" Forrester, 68, of Sunbury, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017, peacefully at Harrison Senior Living of Snow Hill.
He was born Oct. 16, 1948, in Sunbury, PA, he was the son of William C. "Rip" Forrester II and Dorothy Christian Forrester.
Larry attended Drumheller Elementary School. At the age of 7 years old, he had an extended hospital stay lasting over several weeks due to his appendix rupturing. He attended Sunbury and Shikellamy High Schools, where he was a standout wrestler. After graduation, Larry enlisted in the United States Navy. During his service in the US Navy, he trained as an aviation mechanic with duty stations in California and Texas. In fact in the mid-seventies, he owned and operated hang gliders with a group of friends, who could often be seen soaring over local farm pastures. Larry was very interested in learning more about anything he did. He was an avid reader of technical writings both modern and historical. He was knowledgeable on metal working by modern machines as well as blacksmith techniques. Larry had a strong appreciation for nature, even while he may have been trying to kill it. He enjoyed hunting, boating, fishing and camping. He is likely responsible for several small stands of Chinese Chestnut trees that are now found near some of his favorite hunting spots in Sullivan county, transplanted from his home. He served as President for the Union and was a lifelong advocate for workers' rights. He was a social member of several fire companies in the sunbury area. Larry was also a member of the American Legion. He was employed as a pipe fitter for Merck Chemical Company, a millwright and machinist Kennedy VanSaun Corporation, and materials expediter at TRW. He was always willing to help a friend or a stranger but was sure to let you know what you were doing wrong while he helped. He had little tolerance for someone not willing to take ownership of their own responsibilities and was never one to ask for help himself. Most of all Larry was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many.
He is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Myers and her husband Rick of Snow Hill, MD; a son, John Forrester Jr. and his wife Deborah of Waynesboro, PA as well as three grandsons, Zachary L. Forrester, Alexander F Forrester, and Aidan J. Myers.
Besides his parents, Larry is preceded in death by his ex-wife Jean Forrester and a brother William C. Forrester III
Services will be private.
