James Showalter Straub, 76, of Winfield, passed away unexpectedly on July 3, 2018.
He was the son of the late Charles W. Straub, MD, and Dorothy (Showalter) Straub of Middleburg and Selinsgrove.

James was a 1959 graduate of Selinsgrove Area Joint High School and earned a bachelor of science degree in forest engineering from the University of West Virginia, after receiving his associate degree in forestry from Paul Smiths College, where he was class president. He began degree work in physics at Bucknell University where he was a member of the Pershing Rifles Drill Team within the Army ROTC program. Through course work at the University of Delaware underwritten by the Coast Guard he also earned a Sea Captain license.
James served in the Army for three years, having spent 16 months in South Korea. He received numerous awards and decorations for his marksmanship, leadership, and expertise in field artillery and small arms repair.

His places of employment included Wilt Ford, Middleburg; R.C. Enterprises; King James Palace (proprietor); Penn Valley Airport; and the PA Dept. of Forests and Waters.
As a veteran, he was a life member of American Legion Post 52, Middleburg; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6631, Selinsgrove; and was a charter member of the Middlewest Veterans Honor Guard. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, A.B.A.T.E.; Kreamer and Union County Sportsmen's Clubs; A.O.P.A.; Corvette Club of America; PA Forest Heritage Association; Sierra Club; and served as a Bald Eagle State Forest fire warden for more than 35 Years.
Jim was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran Faith.

Jim loved life and was passionate about many things: his drums, which he played in high school, Mal Arter Band; Adult Band; and later as an original member of the Grass Menagerie, and as a guest drummer in several local rock and heavy metal bands; nature; good food; celebrating special occasions with his friends and family; Corvettes; gun collecting; hiking; boating on the Susquehanna River and Chesapeake Bay; kayaking; horseback riding; his Harley and ultra-light sport airplane; his cabin in the woods; and his cherished, rescued cats.

Jim was a beloved brother of Robert Straub (LaDawn), and Elizabeth McCormick (Michael Sidler); uncle to Charles Straub (Kelly), Robert Straub (Megan), Ryan McCormick (Rebecca), and Kevin McCormick (Melissa); great-uncle to Hayden, Tiernan, Addison, McKenna, Kyra, Connor, Jackson, Cameron, and Maren; cousin to Graham and Paul Showalter.

He will be dearly missed by his family and all who knew him.

Burial will be private.

Arrangements are by the V.L. Seebold Funeral Home, 601 N. High St., Selinsgrove.
