James E. "Jimmy D." DeLong, 81, of South Center Street, Beavertown, passed away on Monday, Jan. 29, 2018, at his home surrounded by his family after a 2-year courageous battle with cancer.
He was born Nov. 9, 1936, in Beavertown, a son of the late Earl L. and Isabelle N. (Benfer) DeLong. In June of 1984, he married Debra D. (Knepp) DeLong who survives.
Jim attended Beaver Vocational School.
Early on he was employed at the Beavertown Brick Plant, he later drove truck for Gra-ter Industries and eventually the Beavertown Block Plant from where he retired.
Jim attended Manbeck Church.
In his spare time he enjoyed visiting at his daughter Kim's barber shop and socializing with people in general, he liked going for rides with his wife, sitting on his front porch, spending quality time with his family, playing with his dogs, and was an avid NASCAR fan. Earlier in life he was a drag racer and also raced dirt track at the Selinsgrove speedway.
He is survived by his children, Zachary J. DeLong, Kim A. DeLong, Timothy R. DeLong, Douglas E. Shaffer and wife Heather, Troy A. Shaffer and wife Kathy, LaDawn M. Fait and husband Corey. He is also survived by grandchildren, Shaun Knepp, Logan and Alivia Plank, Tyler, Katelyn, Trey, Kailey, Madisyn, and Paityn Shaffer with whom he loved spending time with; numerous other grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one sister, Barbara L Geedey; numerous nieces and nephews; and he was known to many as "Pappy Jim".
He was preceded in death by one brother, Arthur "Mike" DeLong.
A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to noon Saturday at Manbeck Church followed by a memorial service at noon with the Rev. James Neimond Jr. officiating, assisted by Darvin Reich.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Manbeck Church, 14093 Stage Road, Beaver Springs, PA 17812.
A special thanks to 365 Hospice, especially Karen and Brooke for the care and compassion they showed to Jim and his family.
