James's Story

James O. "Jim" Betz, 90, Washingtonville, passed away Monday, Oct. 16, 2017, with his family by his side at The Gardens, Millville, where he had been admitted Sept. 13, 2017.

He was born Aug. 3, 1927, in Exchange, Montour County. Jim was the son of the late George W. and Stella M. (Long) Betz. On Oct. 14, 1950, he married the former Dorothy M. Buss and they have celebrated 67 years of marriage.

Jim attended Turbotville High School and enlisted in the Navy where he served with the Seabees for two years during World War II and then served three years with the Army.

He retired in 1989 from the Montour SES Power Plant where he had worked for 18 years. Earlier in his life he had owned and operated several businesses in Montour County.

Jim was a member of the St. James Episcopal Church, Exchange, the Muffly Huff Post 8206 VFW, Turbotville, the American Legion Post, Millville, and Washingtonville Fire Company.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, NASCAR, and boating, but most precious to him were times spent with his family and friends. He also enjoyed time spent with two special friends, Shawne and Lisa.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three sons, Larry J. Betz and his wife Patricia, of Washingtonville, Randy L. Betz, of Sunbury, and Jerry W. Betz and companion Julie McCarty, of Bloomsburg; two daughters, Carol A. Betz, of Leicester, Vt.. and Ali L. Betz, of Richmond, Va.; eight grandchildren, Carey, Scott and wife Rebecca, Chris and wife Lori, Ryan and wife, Becky, Jessica and husband, Chris, Brian, Kristi and fiance, Ryan, and Jayden; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, John C. Betz and his wife, Susie, of Turbotville; and many nieces and nephews and their families.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, William, George, Pat and Miles M. Betz Sr.; one sister, Jean D. Brehm; and one great-granddaughter, Hannah E. Betz.

Friends and family are invited to a visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Brooks Funeral Home & Cremation Svc. PC, 207 Broadway St., Turbotville, followed by a memorial service at 11, with Pastor Shawn McNett of Trinity United Church of Christ, Strawberry Ridge, officiating.

The family will provide the flowers and suggests contributions in Jim's memory be made to the Alzheimer's Association, NEPA Chapter, 71 N. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701, or Geisinger Columbia Montour Hospice, 410 Glenn Ave., Suite 200, Bloomsburg, PA 17815.
