Helen J. Smith
She was born Nov. 26, 1934, in Mount Pleasant Mills, a daughter of the late Edward David and Sarah Elizabeth (Portzline) Try. On April 28, 1951, she married John R. Smith who preceded her in death on Sept. 17, 2017.
Helen had been employed at Shuler Potato Chips, Rochester, N.Y., and for many years at area garment factories including Beaver Manufacturing, Mifflinburg Shirt Factory, Blough Wagner Manufacturing, and Juniata Garment.
She was a long time member of Zion "Arbogast" Lutheran Church, Mount Pleasant Mills, the Loyal Order of Moose, Middleburg, the Reliance Hose Company, Middleburg where she had served as an EMT for more than 20 years. She ran the bingo stand at the Middleburg carnival for many years. She was a 10-gallon blood donor.
Helen enjoyed gardening and working with her flowers, reading, crocheting, sewing, and sitting on her porch and visiting with her neighbors. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. She will be remembered as a people person who enjoyed talking and visiting with others.
She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Betty J. and Harvey Martin of Middleburg, and Lori S. Brouse of Beavertown; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Russell D. Herman of Middleburg; and one brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Sharon Try of Beaver Springs.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda Herman in 2002; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Pauline Long; and five brothers, George, Gene, Harold, Ray and Carl Try; and three siblings in infancy.
A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg, where the funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Lisa Raylene Barnes officiating.
Burial will be in the Arbogast Church Cemetery, Mount Pleasant Mills.
