George's Story

George A. Bastian, 94, of Sunbury passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, Oct. 13, 2017, at the UPMC Susquehanna Sunbury Hospital.

He was born Dec. 20, 1922 in Sunbury. On March 29, 1952, he married Mary J. Bastian who preceded him in death.

George served in the Army from March 1943 to December 1945 as private first class with the 302nd Military Police Escort Company. He received numerous medals including the Bronze Service Arrowhead for participating in D-Day landing, Normandy, France.

George was employed by Westinghouse, L'Aiglon, Sunbury Textile Mills and Phillips Products.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 201, Fraternal Order of Eagles #503, Americus Hose Co. and various other organizations.

George resided at the Nursing and Rehabilitation at the Mansion, Sunbury, for the past five years. He was given exceptional care by the entire staff. A special thank you goes to Ana, Michelle, Mary, Jamie, Jill and Kelly.

He is survived by one daughter, Bonnie L. Wagner, of Paxinos; two sons Gregory A. Bastian, of Sunbury, and Steven L. Bastian, of Northumberland; seven grandchildren, Aleece J. Butler and husband Matthew, Jessica L Spaide and husband Michael, Robert N. Wagner, Justin A. Bastian, Stephanie M. Bastian, Jenna L. Bastian, and Matthew B. Bastian and wife Danielle; seven great-grandchildren, Hope Drumm, Davin and Zola Butler, Grace, Audrey, Amelia and Charlotte Spaide; and one nephew and his wife, Barry and Carol Dooley of New Jersey.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the David T. Zweier Funeral Home, Inc., 157 Chestnut St. Sunbury, where the funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, with Mr. Richard Simpson, Legion Commander, officiating.

Interment will follow in the Riverview Cemetery, Northumberland.
