Gene A. Ray, 80, of Queen Street, Northumberland, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2018, at his home.
He was born May 19, 1937, in Northumberland, a son of the late Albert Samuel and Ruth A. (Diehl) Ray. On June 20, 1958, he married the former Judith A. "Judy" Bettleyon who preceded him in death on Feb. 19, 2015.
Gene was a 1955 graduate of Northumberland High School and attended Susquehanna University.
He began employment with the railroad and was employed for many years with Rae & Derick in Northumberland until they're closing. He later worked for several businesses including Lewisburg Builders Supply, ButterKrust Bakery, and the Northumberland County Transit Authority.
He was a member of St John's Lutheran Church, Northumberland, the Eureka Lodge 404 Free & Accepted Masons, Northumberland where he served as past master, and a member and firefighter with the Northumberland Fire Company Number 1.
Gene enjoyed time spent at the beach, especially at Cape May, was an avid Dallas Cowboy fan, and enjoyed attending New York Mets baseball games with his children. He and his wife, Judy were great dancers who loved to do the jitterbug.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Angela Ray, and one daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Rick Zeigler, all of Northumberland; eight grandchildren, Holly, Scott, Sammi, Brandon, Zach, Wesley Lain and Brody; and two great-grandchildren, Mason and Lucas.
In addition to his parents and wife of 56 years, he was preceded in death by one son, Michael G. Ray; and one sister, Ruthie Leitzel.
Friends and family may call from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday at the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St., Northumberland, with a Masonic service begining at 10:45. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. with Pastor Patricia Pittsnogle officiating.
Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Northumberland
Gene had a great love for dogs and his family asks that contributions in Gene's memory be made to Mostly Mutts, 284 Little Mountain Road, Sunbury, PA 17801.
