Fred's Story

Fred V. Kurtz, 64, of Milton, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2017, at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
He was born May 25, 1953, in Lewisburg, a son of the late James Jr. and Marion (Batdorf) Kurtz. He was married to the former Cindy Lenhart who survives. They would have celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary on Aug. 20.

Fred was a 1971 graduate of Milton High School and had served in the Navy for 30 years, retiring as a Master Chief. While serving with distinction he helped implement and lead a new unit for augmentation by Aviation Boatswain's Mates for Fire & Emergency Rescue Crews as the Senior Enlisted Leader/Executive Officer.
He had worked for Weis Market in his early years, AC&F for 30 years, and Norfolk Southern for 13 years.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Muncy and the F&AM Lodge 256, Milton, an active member of the Milton Fire Department for 48 years beginning with the Goodwill Hose Company in 1969. With the Milton department he had served as Asst. Chief, Deputy Chief and Chief of Dept. from 1992 to 1999. He was the treasurer of the Fireman's Relief Assoc. of Milton from 1979 to 1982 and from 1989 to present. He was awarded Firefighter of the Year in 1986, Swisher in 2000, and MFD Service Award in 2001.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Heather and Dante Osborne and Hayley and Corey Hutchings, all of Baltimore, and Mandy and Shawn Hartman, of Milton; four grandchildren, Aiden and Braxton Hartman and Lilian and Arden Hutchings; one brother, Jimmy Kurtz, of Watsontown; and two sisters, Pat Klobe, of Milton and Debbie Frye, of Muncy.
He loved being Pappy to his grandchildren.

Friends and relatives will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at Bethany United Methodist Church, 107 S. Front St., Milton, followed by a memorial service at 1, with the Rev. Arlene Beechert officiating.
Burial with military honors will follow in Harmony Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Fred's memory may be made to the Milton Fire Department, 208 Race St., Milton, PA 17847.
