Eugene L. "Gene" Strouse, 86, of King Street, Northumberland, passed away early Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017, at his home.
He was born Feb. 15, 1931, in Point Township, a son of the late Harry P. and Dorothy (Marks) Strouse. On March 9, 1952, he married the former Elenor Jean Longacre who preceded him in death on June 2, 2012.
Gene was a 1949 graduate of Northumberland High School where he was a member of the gymnastics team.
He gained employment with Acme Foods, Northumberland as a meat cutter, later the Neighborhood Store, and for 33 years, along with his wife, owned and operated Gene's Market, Northumberland.
He was a longtime member of the Winkelbach Dam Rod and Gun Club where he pursued his love of the outdoors; hunting and fishing. He was also a faithful blood donor to the Red Cross.
In his younger years Gene enjoyed playing baseball and later slow pitch softball. He loved tending his gardens and spent many hours canning vegetables and fruits. His happiest times were spent with his family especially while hunting and fishing with his four sons.
He is survived by three sons and one daughter-in-law, Eugene L. Strouse Jr., of Northumberland, Richard L. and Kristy J. Strouse, of Selinsgrove, and Donald J. Strouse, of Northumberland; five grandchildren, Levi D. Strouse, James A. Strouse Jr., Jennifer J. Sheaffer, Jacob R. and Jesse L. Strouse; 14 great-grandchildren, Destiny, Thomas, Nevaeh, Devon, Natalie, Delaney, Derrick, Rebeckah, Zoe, Dawson, Gabriel, Matthew, Layla and Riley; five stepgreat-grandchildren, Dakota, Abigail, Evan, Max and Harper; one brother, Harry P. Strouse Jr. and wife Nedra, of Dover; one sister, Suzanne L. Fulmer and husband Franklin, of Milton; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife of 60 years, Gene was preceded in death by one son, James Allen Strouse; and one brother, James A. Strouse.
Friends and family may call from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St., Northumberland, followed by the funeral at 11, with the Rev. Leslie Halchak of Trinity United Methodist Church, Northumberland, officiating.
Burial will follow in the Garden of Repose in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
