Edna M. Messner, 91, of Selinsgrove passed away Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2018.
She was born Dec. 5, 1926, in Sunbury, the daughter of the late Clarence Forest and Laura Edna (Ramsey) Bogart. She married the late Jack I. Messner on Sept. 17, 1948.
Edna was a 1944 graduate of Sunbury High School, serving as class secretary for many years.
Edna's vigilant awareness of the needs of others shaped her actions. In her work as a realtor, her mission was to help people find an affordable home where they could be happy. As the founder of the Messner-Bogart Scholarship Fund, she encouraged young people cobbling together funds to pay for higher education.
Her motto clearly was less for myself, more for others.
The gift of being present for her grandchildren meant a full calendar of sporting events and concerts. Edna enjoyed Easter sunrise services, a challenging game of bridge or pinochle, and singing. Her devotion to her husband was absolute.
Edna was a member of Sharon Lutheran Church, Selinsgrove. She was a lifelong member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Lafayette Chapter 222.
She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Jeffery Sassaman; and one son and daughter-in-law, James and Linda Messner; four grandchildren and spouses, Rebecca and Joseph Gidjunis, Philip Sassaman, John and Shelly Messner, and Dr. Ann and Winton DeShong; three great-grandchildren, Jackson and Jodi Messner and Gabe Gidjunis; one sister, Grace Cooper; one sister-in-law, Eleanor Bogart; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Albert Bogart and Sherwood Bogart; one sister, Zereta Moyer; one nephew, David Cooper; and one niece, Bonnie Ladd.
A time of visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, at Sharon Lutheran Church, 120 Market St., Selinsgrove, followed by the funeral at 11.
In lieu of flowers, Edna would be pleased if you purchased a book for a small child and read it often.
Arrangements are by the David T. Zweier Funeral Home, 157 Chestnut St., Sunbury.
