Dorothy Mae Rhodes

Dorothy Mae Rhodes, 90, of 345A Bear Gap Road, Elysburg, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, Saturday, Jan. 6, 2018, at the Geisinger-Shamokin Area Community Hospital after a brief illness.
She was born Sept. 26, 1927, in Elysburg, a daughter of the late Clarence and Helen (Kuhar) Hornberger in Cleveland Township, Columbia County. She lived at the family home her entire life until her illness brought her to live with her daughter.

Dorothy graduated from Ralpho Township High School, and the Bloomsburg Teacher's College where she earned her bachelor's degree in elementary education.
On July 2, 1966, at Montrose Bible Conference, she married Roland Rush Rhodes who preceded her in death on Oct. 3, 2003.
In her early years as a school teacher, Dorothy taught fourth grade students in the Shamokin Area School District. She then taught for a number of years at Meadowview Christian Academy.
She was a member of Victory Bible Church, Paxinos, where she taught Sunday school and plaid the church piano.
Dorothy loved writing letters, doing embroidery work, cooking and entertaining guests at her home.
As a young woman, Dorothy accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her personal savior. Since then, she strove to please her Lord by her kind words, encouraging letters, generous deeds, and above all, her fervent prayers for her family and friends. She was a faithful witness in telling others on how to receive Jesus Christ as their personal savior.
Her favorite Bible verse was Romans 12:1 and 2: "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." (KJV)
Dorothy is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Jane and Joseph Humes, of Shamokin; one son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Tina Rhoades, of Paxinos; and four grandchildren; one brother, Ralph Hornberger and his wife, Joan, of Langhorne; and in-laws; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at Victory Bible Church, Snydertown Road, followed by the funeral at 1, with the Rev. Kevin Kline presiding.
Burial will be in the Pine Hill Cemetery, Elysburg.
