Dorothy G. O'Neill

November 13, 1925 - September 08, 2018

Dorothy G. O'Neill Dorothy G. O'Neill, 92, of Mount Pleasant Mills, peacefully left this world on Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018, after suffering a fall on July 24. She was surrounded by her loving family. Dorothy was the last of her family.

She was born Friday, Nov. 13, 1925, in Queens, a daughter of the late Charles and Stefanie Prutz. She kept her accent for her whole life. She learned to swim in the Hudson River when her papa tied a rope around her waist and threw her over the side of a barge. Her love of swimming followed her into adulthood and she could still be seen going off the diving board at age 88.

On Nov. 23, 1961, she and Thomas O'Neill packed a car and drove to Las Vegas to get married. They ran into some trouble and instead kept driving west to Burbank, Calif., where they ultimately tied the knot.

Dorothy worked as an operator for the New York Telephone Company and enjoyed her coworkers very much. Six months short of having enough time in to collect a pension, she followed Tommy to Australia when his office transferred him. A homemaker there, she enjoyed swimming in the Great Barrier Reef and going to the horse races.

She relocated to Central Pennsylvania to live with her sister, Helen Bury, after Tommy died in 2005. Never having the need for a driver license due to living in the bustling city, she enjoyed the calm of the country.

Dorothy enjoyed any occasion that called for pearls or champagne. She enjoyed watching Regis Philbin and Days of Our Lives. She sent cards for every occasion and prayed fervently for her family. She wasted not and wanted not, and she loved generously.

She is survived locally by two nieces, Jeannie and Chris Erdley, of Mount Pleasant Mills, and Nancy Dunbar, of Middleburg; one nephew, David Bury, of Selinsgrove; a great nephew, Jason and Katie Erdley, of Mount Pleasant Mills; two great-nieces, Amanda and Dustin Carl, of Selinsgrove and Rosa and John Struble, of Mifflinburg; four great-great-nephews, Henry, Reed, Wesley, and Brady; one great-great-niece, Polly; and her special friend, Darlene Noll. She is survived by many nieces and nephews in California.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Frank Bury and Elsie and Carl Anderson; and a brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Evelyn Prutz.

Friends and family are invited to the memorial service at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, at the George P. Garman Funeral Homes, Inc., 9366 Route 35, Mount Pleasant Mills. Officiating will be Pastor Johnny Blake.

Dorothy will be missed, but remembered with fondness by all who knew her. Her family wishes to thank the staff of the Manor at Penn Village and Geisinger Shamokin who took such good care of her during her last month.
