Donald R. Hare, 85, of Sunbury, passed away Tuesday, July 4, 2017, at the Sunbury Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born in Selinsgrove on Dec. 5, 1931, the son of the late Calvin and Nellie (Bickel) Hare. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Nancy Ocker, on May 22, 2014.
Donald graduated from Selinsgrove High School in 1949 and then served with the Army in Germany from 1951 to 1953. He received his bachelor's degree from Bloomsburg University in 1957 and his master's degree from Bucknell University in 1964. He spent most of his teaching career at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Md. where he was chairman of the mathematics department. He was awarded the Outstanding Teacher of Mathematics Award by the Washington D.C. chapter of the Society of Mathematics and Actuaries.
He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church, Sunbury.
Donald is survived by one sister, Helen Streitz, of Sunbury; and by nieces, nephews and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, June Wagner and Catherine Broome.
A visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday at the Zion Lutheran Church, Sunbury, followed by the funeral service at 2 p.m.
Interment will be in the Pomfret Manor Cemetery, Sunbury.
In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make donations to his church.
Arrangements are by the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury.
