Donald's Story

Text size

Donald Raymond Bower, 88, entered into rest peacefully on Monday, Nov. 13, 2017, in Selinsgrove.

He was born March 6, 1929, in Port Trevorton, one of five children born to Raymond and Mable Bower.

Donald married his wife, Hazel Varner, in September of 1948. The couple started their lives together as a married couple in Liverpool, and later moved to Selinsgrove with their two sons, Jerry and Terry Bower.

Donald was a proud Mayor of Selinsgrove and Master of Masonic Lafayette Lodge No. 194. He was also the past president of the Shrine Club in Sunbury. He was the founder of Selinsgrove Thrift Stores and Penn Avon Campground in Selinsgrove. Donald worked on the Pennsylvania Railroad for several years. While doing so, he began barbering in Liverpool. He later turned his passion for barbering into a 26 year long career and the beginning of the Hairquarters in Selinsgrove which remains in operation by his son, Jerry.

In all that Donald did, his goal was to help and provide to others. He thoroughly enjoyed his time spent transporting children with disabilities to receive medical care at their respective hospitals through the Shine Club as well as working with the Selinsgrove Ambulance as an emergency first responder. Donald was also a long time member of the Fraternal Order of Police where he helped to provide support in advocating for the safety of law enforcement officers in Pennsylvania which inspired his granddaughter, Caitlin, to pursue a career in law enforcement.

In his free time, Donald and his wife enjoyed traveling all over the United States with family and friends. They also spent their winters at their home in Estero, Florida, a time which the two enjoyed and looked forward to each year.

In addition to his wife and two sons, Donald is survived by Jerry's wife Etta; four grandchildren, two great-granddaughters; a great-grandson; and was waiting for another great-granddaughter to arrive. Nicholas Steighner, Ann Gardner and great-granddaughter India Gardner as well as Cori Smith and her husband Daniel with their children, Nirloy and Tiffany and Caitlin Letteer along with her husband Todd and great-granddaughter on the way, Finley, will all greatly miss their "Pap Pap" following his passing.

Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Mable Bower, as well as his sister, Shirley Metzger.

A small memorial will be held for the family at a later date.
