Delbert R. Walter


Delbert R. Walter, 90, formerly of Middleburg, recently a resident of the Manor at Penn Village, Selinsgrove, passed away on Monday, Aug. 19, 2019, in the emergency room at UPMC Sunbury.
He was born July 24, 1929, in Paxtonville, a son of the late Martin and Wilma (Kramer) Walter. On Oct. 24, 1953, he married the former Irene W. "Renee" Oberlin who preceded him in death on July 25, 2016.

Delbert was a graduate of Freeburg High School and served in the Army from 1951 to 1953.
His first employment was with Hempt Brothers Construction, Camp Hill, and later at Grove Dress Factory in Selinsgrove, Q-E Manufacturing, New Berlin, and retired from J.G. Ott Packaging, Selinsgrove.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Middleburg for more than 50 years, and a member of American Legion Post 52, Middleburg.
In his early days, Delbert raced go carts winning lots of trophy's and also raced flatheads. He and his son Greg never missed the Saturday night races where they rooted for their favorite drivers. He was also an avid pool shooter. Delbert and Irene enjoyed roller skating with the grandchildren, and after church on Sunday they would take the granddaughter's to McDonald's. Delbert loved to eat, especially spaghetti, Irene's homemade pot pie, and his son-in-laws chili. He will be remembered for his cowboy hat and his love of big cars.

He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Gregory R. and Brenda Walter of Middleburg; one daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Henry E. Steffen Sr. of Middleburg; two grandchildren, Henry E. Steffen Jr. and wife Darla of Beaver Springs, and Timothy E. Steffen of Middleburg; stepgranddaughter, Mary Roush and husband Eric of Elizabethtown; six great-grandchildren, Kayla Steffen Keister, Keshia Steffen Carnahan, Nicholas Steffen, Shawna Steffen, Timmy Steffen and Matthew Yakamook; four stepgreat-grandchildren, Eric, Blaze, Jade and John Roush; nine great-great-grandchildren, Briahna, Austin, Trinity, Graysen, Colton, Aubrey, Finnley, Brandi, and Luna, and one on the way; one sister, Twila Long of Middleburg; three sisters-in-law, Pat Walter of Mount Union, Madeline Walter of Winfield, and Jane Walter of Penns Creek.
He was preceded in death by one great-grandson, Ricky Steffen; and three brothers, Lee, Bruce, and Glenn Walter.

Friends and family will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at the Hummel Funeral Home, 574 Hill St., Middleburg, followed by the funeral at 11, with the Rev. Darryl Kuhns officiating.
Burial with military honors by the Middlewest Veterans Honor Guard will be in Glendale Cemetery, Middleburg.

AS .a child I stayed at Uncle Delberts and Aunt Irenes house many times. Have many good memories of that. I remember visiting Delbert at the nursing home and he remembered my wife right away. It took him a little longer but then he remembered me. Rest in peace Delbert you are a very good man!
