Daniel's Story

Daniel J. Gasteiger, 58, of 69 Ridge Road, Lewisburg, died Thursday, June 1, 2017, at the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, due to pancreatic cancer.

A native of Rochester N.Y., he was born Feb. 23, 1959, a son of the late Charlotte (Hammar) Gasteiger and Edgar Gasteiger, of Ithica, N.Y. He was married to the former Stacy Pierce and his death breaks a marital union of 30 years.

Daniel received his bachelor of arts degree from Cornell University in 1982. Daniel worked for many years as a magazine editor for Lotus Development Corp. At that time he wrote several books about computing. Later, as an independent consultant, he worked for IBM, Proctor and Gamble, and Harvard University. He worked for several years at CSSI, Inc.

Most recently, he was a self-employed writer writing about gardening and food, had several gardening blogs, and wrote a book, "Yes, You Can" about gardening. Recently, he wrote and chronicled articles for The Daily Item about his fight with pancreatic cancer.

Besides gardening, he enjoyed golf, photography, cooking and pool. He and Stacy had hosted many international students over the years.

In addition to his wife and father, he is survived by three children, Matthew Gasteiger, of Cornwall, N.Y., Callum Gasteiger and his fiance Jay Silver, of Williamsport, and Cassidy Gasteiger of Washington, D.C. Also surviving are three brothers, Kirpal Gasteiger, Kris Gasteiger and Eric Gasteiger.

Friends and relatives will be received from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the John H. Shaw III Funeral Home. A period of reflection and sharing of memories will follow at 5.

The family will provide flowers and asks that donations in Daniel's memory be made to either BicyclesAgainstPoverty.org or Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (pancan.org).
