Clara's Story

Clara M. Shearer, 86, of Main Street, New Columbia, passed away Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017, while surrounded by her children, known as her jewels, at Evangelical Community Hospital.
She was born Feb. 22, 1931, in Lewis Township, Northumberland County, a daughter of the late Frank M. and Erma E. (Holdren) Hagerman. On June 30, 1951, she married William T. Shearer in Zion Lutheran Church, Turbotville, where she was a former member, and they celebrated 36 years of marriage until his on death March 17, 1988.

Clara was a 1948 graduate of Turbotville High School.
She had been employed at Montgomery Mills and retired in 1996 from American Home Foods, Milton. She also was a representative for Sarah Coventry jewelry, hosting many home jewelry parties when her children were young to support the family income.
She was a woman of "strong constitution" as quoted from her doctors. She was a two-time cancer survivor and participated in the Milton Relay for Life Survivor's Walk. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church, New Columbia where she founded the "Love Tree" for loved ones in the church family that had passed away or those that wanted to remember those still living. She was know for starting the fall fundraiser of making homemade apple dumplings that were sold at the New Columbia Apple Butter Festival. The secret was in the pie dough.
Clara was active with both the Sesquicentennial Celebration in New Columbia in 1968 and the Bicentennial in 1976. She enjoyed traveling after her retirement, preparing holiday meals and family picnics for her family, baking her grandmothers delicious rolled sugar cookies, QVC, gardening, flowers, and making sand tarts with her family.

Surviving are two sons and one daughter-in-law, David W. Shearer, of Mifflinburg and Frank O. and Kathy Shearer, of New Columbia; one daughter and son-in-law, Melodee A. and David Mensch, of Milton; eight grandchildren, Jessica, Matthew, Nathan, Michael, Dawn, Ryan, Megan, and Faith; four great-grandchildren, Addison, Kendra, Charlie, and Rey; and numerous nieces and nephews from Pennsylvania and New York.
She was preceded in death by one son, Donald W. Shearer on May 8, 2001.

Friends and family are invited to call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 1 to 2 p.m. Friday, followed by the funeral at 2, at Brooks Funeral Home & Cremation Svc, PC., 207 Broadway St., Turbotville, with her pastor, Christine Mastin officiating and retired pastor Robert Rice, assisting.
Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery, New Columbia.
