Charles's Story

Charles L. Swartz, Sr., 86, of Limestoneville, passed away on Friday, Feb. 9, 2018, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Born July 6, 1931, in Limestoneville, he was the son of the late Herman D. and Hazel (Phillips) Swartz.

On Feb. 28, 1952, he married the former Dorothy F. File and they celebrated 65 years of marriage, until her death on Nov. 27, 2017.

He was a 1949 graduate of the former Turbot-Lewis High School.

Early in life he farmed for six years, before working for the Curtiss Company as an artificial cattle breeder. In 1964 he began his own excavating business, which then became Limestone Mobile Concrete, which he co-owned with his son, Dennis. During those years he also owned and operated his own school bus, serving the Warrior Run School District. He also served as a Limestone Township Supervisor for over 38 years.

He was a member of Paradise United Church of Christ, where he was a past president of the Consistory and former Sunday school teacher and confirmation leader.

Surviving are three sons and daughter-in-laws, Charles L. Jr. and Janet Swartz, Herman A. and Kathleen Swartz, and Dennis E. and Melanie Swartz, all of Milton; six grandchildren, Matthew and Mark Swartz, Colleen Romano, Beth Keister, and Clinton and Kyle Swartz; seven great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law and her husband, Rebecca and Charles Fritzges of Milton.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Charles Donald Swartz; one granddaughter Tiffany Lynn Swartz; one great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Lou Swartz; one brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Mamie Swartz; and two sisters who died in infancy.

A graveside service will be held privately at the convenience of the family at the Washingtonville Lutheran Cemetery.
