Charles's Story

Charles A. Attinger, 82, of Sunset Lane, Northumberland, passed away Saturday, Dec. 9, 2017, at UPMC Susquehanna Sunbury Community Hospital.

Charlie was born Sept. 23, 1935, in Sunbury, a son of the late Charles and Helen (Woodcock) Attinger. On April 19, 1958, he married the former Marilyn K. McCreary who survives.

Mr. Attinger was a 1954 graduate of Sunbury High School where he was a member of the basketball team.

At the age of 17 he gained employment with Acme Foods, Inc. and retired after 43 years of service as store manager. He later transported vehicles and delivered parts for Zimmerman Motors, Sunbury.

He was a faithful member of Christ United Methodist Church, Northumberland. Charlie served the church as a trustee, head usher and was a member of the Charlie Bell Sunday School Class.

As an active member of his community, Charlie served for many years on the borough council and Riverview Cemetery Board as well as the Shikellamy Band Parents Association. He was a life member of the Point Township Fire Deptartment, Northumberland Hook & Ladder and the Northumberland No. 1 Fire Company, serving as the chief truck driver. His efforts were recognized in 2001 when he received the Pineknotter of the Year Award.

He had a great love for restoring antique cars and attending car shows. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his family. He and Marilyn took many cruises together to various locations. He found great joy in spending time with his grandchildren and taking them on tractor rides.

In addition to his wife of 59 years, Charlie is survived by two sons and one daughter-in law, Todd A. Attinger, of Northumberland and Timothy A. and Cheryl Attinger, of Harrisburg; one daughter, Cynthia K. Oakes, of Northumberland; five grandchildren, Jessica Mirarchi and husband Marshall, of Kulpmont, Bradlie Attinger and Nicholas Oakes, both of Northumberland and Cole and Chase Attinger, of Harrisburg; three great-grandchildren, Marshall and Miles Mirarchi and Haley Oakes, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Horace, William and Paul Attinger; and three sisters, Betty Miller, Allethea Bell and Helen Elaine Attinger.

Friends and family may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, at Christ United Methodist Church, Front and King streets, Northumberland, and again from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, followed by the funeral service at 11 with Pastor Joan Dodson officiating.

Burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery, Northumberland.
