Betty J. Snyder, 94, of Shamokin Dam, passed away Thursday, Sept. 22, 2017, at The Manor at Penn Village.
Margaret (Startzel) Kohler and Charles Kohler welcomed their baby Betty into the world on March 6, 1923, at their home in Shamokin. Betty had four siblings, Margaret Kohler, Mary (Kohler) Purcell, Bob Kohler and Shirley (Kohler) Snyder. She would tell happy stories of the Kohler children selling baked goods out of a wagon to make extra money to help the family during the Depression. Betty graduated from Shamokin High School and was a regular attendee of the Shamokin Alumni Association reunions. She was very proud of her alma mater.
Betty married Robert O. Burd. They had a son, Robert C. Burd, and the family moved to Shamokin Dam. After the death of her husband Robert O. Burd, she was fortunate to find love again and marry Rev. Herman Snyder. She was very active in her beloved Shamokin Dam United Methodist Church, where she was a loyal member for more than 50 years, participating in the choir and as treasurer. She loved volunteering in the gift shop at RiverWoods in Lewisburg and preparing care packages for those in need. Many people know Betty from her 19 years spent working at Monroe Township Elementary School as an aide. She was the one that handled the paper work, tended to cuts and scrapes from recess and the exchange of money for lunch, as well as many other tasks. Up until her passing, she enjoyed her regular breakfast reunions with the retired teachers of our district. Betty made lifelong friendships and her true joy came from being with friends and family.
Betty was welcomed into heaven by the loved ones who preceded her in death: her parents and siblings, her husbands Robert and Herman and her cherished son Bob Burd. Surviving are daughter-in-law, Gail Fischer; grandchildren, Bill Burd and wife Chris, Missy Bingaman and husband Mike and Matt Burd and wife Taleisha; seven great-grandchildren; two nieces and four nephews.
A viewing will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, at the Shamokin Dam United Methodist Church, 3603 N. Old Trail, Shamokin Dam, followed by the funeral at 11 a.m. with Pastor Cynthia Gunter and Rev. Dr. Dietmar Plajer officiating.
Burial will follow in Northumberland Memorial Park, Sunbury.
