Allen W. "Toby" Tobias, 86, a former resident of Sunbury, passed away peacefully at his home in York Haven and into the loving arms of Jesus Christ on Tuesday morning, May 30, 2017.
He was born Sept. 18, 1930, in West Cameron Township, Northumberland County. Toby married the love of his life, the former Elsie Faraguna on Dec, 15, 1951, in New York City. They were married for 65 loving years.
Toby attended and graduated from Coal Township High School in 1948. He served four years in the Navy and was honorably discharged with a Good Conduct Medal.
He was a generous and loving man to his family and friends alike. He spent the majority of his career working his way up through positions at Asplundh Tree Expert Co., and finally retiring after 35 years as a vice president.
He attended Emmanuel Bible Fellowship Church in Sunbury until moving to the Harrisburg area.
Toby was an avid gardener, hunter, and fisherman. He was an award winning expert trap shooter in Pennsylvania and Maryland. He was a member of the Carlisle Fish and Game Association. He enjoyed his annual fishing vacation to the Thousand Isle area of Canada with his family and relatives until his health prevented him from making the journey to Canada.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Martha Roberta Hornberger, and his father, Kermit Roosevelt Tobias.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie; his son, Allen Paul and his wife, Anita; three grandchildren, Alaina M., Leanna J., and Allen M.;his grandson-in-law, Cory Tobias, and his great granddaughter, Raine Elise, who reside in the Harrisburg area; sister-in-law, Francis La Magna, of New York; and many nieces and nephews. Allen was very close to his sister, Jane E. Heim and husband Lawrence "Skeets", of Sunbury, and his brother, Kermit R. and his wife Annetia, of Mercer. Kermit, Skeets and Toby were lifelong fishermen and hunters. They loved being in the great outdoors together!
A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Interment with full military honors will be in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington.
