Albert L. "Al" Goss, 64, of Paxinos, passed away on May 19, 2017, where he was surrounded by his family to comfort him. Al left this world as he would have imagined, enjoying the most of life and doing activities that he loved best.
Weary of reading obituaries noting someone's courageous battle with death, Al wanted it known that he died as a result of being stubborn, refusing to follow doctors' orders and raising hell for more than six decades. He enjoyed his booze, cigarettes, being retired, spoiling his grandchildren, and living a full life until the day he died.
A local celebration of his life will be held for family and close friends and his interment will be held at Arlington National Ceremony at a later date.
He was born Nov. 6, 1952, in Towanda, to Deurell A. and Martha A. Goss.
Third of nine children, he attended Shamokin area schools and was a graduate of Shamokin High School Class of 1970. Al could accomplish anything he set his mind to do. At a very early age, he was someone that could be depended upon, and he was always inventing a "better" way to "fix" things. He kept you with a smile upon your face and always had people gathered when he would tell one of his famous stories or "AL'isms".
Al joined the Air Force in 1977, where he served as an airplane mechanic, air traffic controller, and finally a computer programmer. He spent a career of more than 20 years of service to our country; serving in Texas, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Germany, and Oklahoma. He was decorated with the Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, Air Force Overseas Long Tour Ribbon, and several other awards.
He then spent another two professions providing for his family working for the Department of Defense and the Department of the Interior. He was an "A" member of the Polish Cadets, until their closing, a mentor with the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Foundation (HOBY), volunteer with the Girl Scouts of the USA, and a volunteer with Oklahoma City Parks & Recreation. His favorite past times were working in the yard, building bonfires, and playing with his grandchildren.
Al's life would seem too short to many, but those who knew him understood that the quality of existence far exceeds the quantity of time in which one lives. His smile and sense of humor brought joy to our family and those around him. As he would always say, everyone loved to see him; some when he would arrive and some when he would leave.
Al was married to, Katherine L. Goss (Rebilas) in 1973 at the former St. Stephens Church. They were married 43 years. Al is survived by his loving wife, Kathy, and two children, Stephanie and Michelle; two grandchildren who know that PawPaw made everything better, Wyatt and Alyssa; his three sisters, Patricia Pickering, Katherine Cimino, and Diane Persing, all of Northumberland; his three brothers, Ronald Goss, of Red Cloud, NB, William "Bill" Goss, of Millmont, and Kenneth Goss, of Florence, S.C.; and several nieces and nephews. He was loved by all and will be deeply missed.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, Deurell and Martha Goss; as well as his sisters, Helen Goss and Tina Hawks.
He left instruction for his wife, children, and family to celebrate his life here, and low adherence to this instruction will not be tolerated. Remember, when all else fails, Goonie Goo Goo.
